Your Guide to Getting Started

Whether you’re new to ESA+ or a returning home school family, this page is your one-stop resource for making the most of your scholarship. Here, you’ll find guidance on what expenses are covered and how to purchase them, and helpful tools to keep your home school year running smoothly.

Step-by-Step: How ESA+ Works for Home School Families

Every ESA+ journey is unique, but there are a few key steps that every family should follow if they plan to use these funds to create a home school experience for their children. This timeline will help you to stay on track throughout the school year.

1. Accept Your Award

You’ll receive an email notification of your award. From there, you should log in to MyPortal to accept your ESA+ award, complete the Parent Agreement, and submit any outstanding information.

2. Review Materials & Start Planning

While you wait for funds to be disbursed, review the Allowable Expenses Guide and start planning which materials and services you would like to purchase.

3. Set up your ClassWallet Account

Funds are added to your ClassWallet account in late summer. Once funds are available, you will receive an email from ClassWallet with instructions to set up your account and start purchasing approved materials and services.

4. Use Funds & Prepare for Next Year

Be sure to use your funds before June 15 of each school year and meet any minimum spending requirements to remain eligible for the ESA+ program. Then, log in to MyPortal to renew your award for the following year.

  • Complete your Parent Agreement, W-9, and Home School Registration in MyPortal.
June/July
  • While you wait for funds to be disbursed:
  • Begin reviewing the Allowable Expenses Guide.
  • Check that your preferred providers are enrolled with ESA+
  • Confirm your school choice in MyPortal.
August
  • Log in to MyPortal and complete all tasks, including the LEA Release in early August.
  • Fall scholarship funds deposited to ClassWallet.
  • ClassWallet will send a welcome email to new families with instructions on setting up an account.
September
October
  • Oct 1 - Your student must be enrolled and attending the school listed in MyPortal.
November/December
  • Quick Tip: Plan your spending for the rest of the school year and for summer expenses.
January 
  • Spring scholarship funds deposited to ClassWallet.
  • Watch your mail for your 1099 tax form from the previous year.
  • Continue to make purchases and pay providers.
February/March
  • Respond to your renewal offer in MyPortal to keep your funding for next year.
April
  • Renewal Deadline - Submit your renewal application in MyPortal.
May
  • Minimum Spending Deadline
  • ClassWallet Deadline - Last month to make purchases in ClassWallet for the school year.
June
  • Final deadline - Submit all invoices and purchase requests in ClassWallet by June 15.
Ongoing Reminders
  • Respond to your renewal offer each year to keep your scholarship active.
  • Check MyPortal regularly for deadline reminders and important updates.
  • ESA+ notifies you when it is time to update your student’s documentation of a disability.
  • Subscribe to the ESA+ newsletter.
  • Transfers from Home School to Direct Payment School: Contact ESA+ for help before October 1 for fall or before March 1 for spring.

Parents can purchase three types of products and three types of services with ESA+ funds. For more information, visit Allowable Expenses.

SEAA will deposit funds to your ClassWallet account twice a year, once for fall semester and once for spring semester. For more information, visit How Scholarship Funds Work.

No. ESA+ funds may only be used for products and services that are allowable under program rules.

No. Parents of ESA+ students shop for products on the ClassWallet Marketplace and submit invoices in ClassWallet for services from providers enrolled in the ESA+ Program.
